Sonoma Coal Project

Sedgman undertook the detailed engineering design, construction and commissioning (EPC) of the 800 t/h coal handling and preparation plant in two phases and subsequent flotation to upgrade.

Flexibility for expansion and ease of maintenance were factored into the design. All phases were completed without lost-time injuries, and on time and within budget. Sedgman has operated the plant for Sonoma Mine Management since it was commissioned in 2007 to the present.

Through a staged process, several upgrades have now been completed successfully to increase process yield and throughput. Stage one involved installing a single-stage dense medium cyclone (DMC), spiral and flotation plant. Campaign processing and discrete stockpiling via the radial stacker focused on coking coal production with ability to produce and separately stockpile a thermal or a premium ultra-low volatile product as required.

The facility was designed to accommodate the later implementation of stage two. Stage two involved a second DMC module and product handling system to enable two-stage processing and hence simultaneous production of coking and higher ash products. The raw coal handling system included a 200 t ROM hopper, feeder breaker, secondary sizer, roller screen and tertiary.
