Significant cost savings were achieved for the client as Sedgman undertook detailed design, procurement and construction and commissioning (EPC) of a 450 t/h coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP) on a greenfield site for then owner Macarthur Coal in 2002.

The design enabled a subsequent economical expansion for the preparation plant module to 600 t/h and a product stockpile expansion for an additional product. For this project Sedgman developed a tunnel construction method that reduced tunnel height and saved on earthworks and construction man hours. To reduce overall project costs, the dump hopper was also built into the ground. The compact plant occupies a small footprint, with space allowed for plant capacity to increase without sacrificing accessibility and maintainability. The product and train loading conveyors were designed to extend to five different stockpiles.

It is a robust plant that consistently produced above initial requirements. Sedgman operated the plant successfully under contract for 10 years with the simplicity of the circuit and robust design enabling Moorvale to achieve our lowest quartile operating cost.
